ETIAS: The European Travel Information and Authorization System will start operating in the last quarter of 2026.
The backlog is caused by implementing the "EES— the European Union's Entry/Exit System". This IT system registers non-EU nationals who enter or leave the Schengen area. Six months after the launch of EES, more than 1.4 billion people from 59 visa-exempt countries must obtain the ETIAS to enter 30 European states for short stays.
What is ETIAS?
It is a travel authorization for visa-exempt nationals to enter the European Union. It is linked to the travelers' passports and is valid for three years. If you get a new passport, you must also obtain a new ETIAS. According to the official site, an ETIAS does not mean that you can enter the common European area; the border guards will still verify your entry conditions.
Which countries do you need ETIAS to enter?
