EU Exit/Entry System soon, no passport stamps in the EU

The new automated Entry/Exit System starts in November 2023. As the system registers the third-country nationals digitally, the travelers will no longer need the traditional stamp on their passports.

What is EES (European Entry/Exit System)?

So, the EES's goal is to facilitate the entry of those travelers from third countries who are visa-exempt or have a short-stay visa. Practically, the EES registers their name, passport details, biometric data and the dates when they enter or leave the Schengen Zone. Or the reason for refusing entry. The Member States' adaptation processes took more time than planned. The EES should have launched in 2022, then May 2023, but looks like it will start in November. The EES is connected to the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System). This application allows travelers visa-free access to get travel authorisation online when the EES is operational.

What is the difference between EES and ETIAS?

ETIAS is the application where travelers must pre-register before obtaining the travel permit. Meanwhile, the ESS is the system at the Schengen Zone borders to check the identity and entry permit of the traveler and registers the details as the exact date of entry and exit from the Schengen zone. The ETIAS preregistration has a cost, the fee will be 7 US dollars. Moreover, filling out the ETIAS application is 100% done electronically, it takes only a couple of minutes, and after the payment, the official approval should arrive quickly.

What information must you fill in the ETIAS?

  • Personal information (name, place and time of birth, parents' name, email, phone number)
  • Passport details
  • Education and profession/occupation
  • Travel destination, transfers, and stay locations
  • Criminal past, travel to war or risky countries and expulsion information (if applicable).

How can you avoid using the ETIAS?

The easiest way to get rid of the bureaucracy is to become a resident or a citizen of a Schengen zone member state. Discus Holdings offers tailor-made residency and naturalisation solutions. Ask for a free consultation!
