Montenegro Immigration Law Changes 2019 The latest edition of Montenegro's Immigration Law entered in force. The most significant amendments are related to employed people's temporary residence permits. Property owners can apply for the temporary resident status. This procedure was introduced in 2018, but the legislators had to amend it. According to this latest version, those real estate owners can apply for the temporary residence permit if their share from the ownership is at least 1/2.

Temporary residence for employed foreigners in Montenegro

For the ordinary working people, nothing changed. The temporary residence permit can be issued only for specific jobs with particular employers. The new issue is that executive directors of Montenegrin companies can become residents. Also, applicants, older than 67 years can also obtain the temporary residence permit as employees, executive director or self-employed. In the case of executive directors, they must be the directors of their own companies and must have at least 51% of the company's shares. Previously, foreigners over 67 could not qualify for the resident status because of the restrictions of the Labor Law. The government reduced the time of the decision-making process from twenty to 15 days. The employed person must sign the contract and register at the tax authority in 24 hours, according to Total Montenegro News.

Permanent resident status in Montenegro

From 2019, the children (-14 years) and adults over 65 do not have to pass the local language proficiency exam, when they are applying for the permanent residence permit of Montenegro.
